Northern California Report and Forecast
Date: Friday October 2, 2009
Time: 10:30AM
Today (Friday) conditions have backed off a little before they are due to ramp up again for the weekend.

]A large wind event is due for the weekend, which should kick up stormy surf almost DOH high. Conditions aren’t looking too favorable for surfing, although some sheltered locations that can get away from the wind may be able to find some peaks. On top of the wind swell, there is going to be a long period (20-seconds) groundswell filling in from the S, as a result of a large system that brewed south of French Polynesia last week. This south is looking like it could show some waist to chest high+ surf Saturday increasing to head high on Sunday. Weather is supposed to cool down this evening, and remain rather cloudy and cold through Saturday. As the trough bringing the wind event moves E Sunday, warmer weather and calmer wind conditions should follow shortly. Next week, as winds offshore calm down, so will any swell. Backing off to the ankle to knee high range by next Thursday, and no new storms showing up on the long-range models. Hopefully there is a change over the weekend, stay tuned for updates early next week....

Buoy Readings:
46059 California Buoy has been recovered, but is waiting to be serviced
46212 Humboldt Bay Buoy- 7 ft @ 10 seconds from 307 degrees
46213 Cape Mendocino - 8 ft @ 9 seconds from 307 degrees

46042 Monterey Buoy – 8 ft @ 9 seconds from 327 degrees
46028 Cape San Martin - 8 feet @ 11 seconds from 320 degrees

The CDIP Buoy 157 is showing, NW periods dominantly about 10 seconds from 315 degrees, and south swell is showing at 17 seconds from 170 degrees.

Currently Northern and Central California’s stand out west facing breaks should be seeing surf around overhead+, while stand out south facing spots are seeing ankle high to knee high on the right tide.

Water temps are in the low to upper 50’s through most of Northern and Central California, Crescent City showing 53, Pt Arena 51 and the San Francisco buoy is at 52. Further south Monterey is seeing 55 degrees and Cape San Martin showing 58.
